The Calico Patch

Many thanks to Desi, for organizing our booths at the Books and Barnyard event during the Home Show. Our guild continues to participate in community service, and to all of you who contributed your time to this project...we thank you.

Margi has finally released our 2009 Opportunity Quilt! How wonderful that it was won by one of our guild members. And to Margi, who so willingly takes our opportunity quilts to quilt shows and other events, we appreciate YOU!

We will have a guest speaker at our Day Lilies meeting on May 26. Cathy Erickson, a quilt designer and guest lecturer at Manzanar, will be with us to show and speak about the quilts she has designed. These quilts are inspired by the stories and photos she has researched, of Japanese Americans in internment camps in the 1940’s. Her presentation will be at the beginning of our meeting, (10:00 a.m.) so any of you who usually come to Nite Owls can hopefully plan to come at that time. We will have our regular business meeting following her presentation.

Until then, happy quilting everyone ~ Vivian.

Quilts of Valor

With no Quiltalk in the next couple of months, I would like to encourage of all you to keep stitching those QOVs and the Baby quilts for Camp Pendleton. We have received a lovely thank you from Erie, PA thanking the guild for the beautiful QOVs.  And a touching letter from Chaplain Downing, Jr from Camp Pendleton..

“It is wonderful to receive such generous support from your group.  The quilts are greatly appreciated and will uplift many spirits.  We were able to distribute the beautifully crafted quilts to some of our newborns.  Your gifts will most certainly keep them warm and cozy.”

So keep those machine buzzing through the summer.  Remember that if making a full QOV is too much for you, consider making the pillowcase carrying case that we send them in.  If you are interested I have the simple pattern.  Let me know.

Also, please note that Wildrose Lane Quilting has generously stepped up and offered Guild members the opportunity to purchase batting FOR QOVs at cost.  Contact Nela or Jan.

Thank You!!

UP TO DATE COUNT:

165 QOVs  and 103 Baby Quilts

STILL AT WAR…STILL QUILTING!!!

WorkShops

Marty Voght's August workshop has been changed from the Christmas
Ribbon Twist to a study of Seminole patchwork. Seminole Patchwork is
a very useful technique, for making pieced borders, for narrow strips
to divide the major sections of a stripper, for sashing, and interior borders.
The patchwork is done with strips of fabric, rotary cutter, and
sewing machine. Marty will write directions for three different
patterns. Marty will have a sign-up sheet at the July picnic, and a
supply list. Or if you won't be at the picnic, e-mail her at martyq@suddenlink

Nite Owls Meeting

Happy Birthday to Us, Happy Birthday to Us!!!!

We are 23 years old this year,,,YOOHOOYOOHOO!!

Thank you Dusty!!!

Nite Owls celebrated is full party mode.  From beautiful cupcakes, to special birthday presents for everyone.

It was a good time.  One time I was told that I needed the guild, and I have thought about that a lot.  And you know what my friends, I do the things I do with the guild because I really like it.  I enjoy being with all of you, and getting ideas for meetings, and volunteering my time.  I have made some friends through the guild, and I am here mostly because it is fun and we all share the same passion…..and I hope you all feel the same.

Serena shared some beautiful earth day coloring blocks and Barbara Stuhaan shared some of the quilts from 4H Club.

Happy Birthday everyone, you look marvelous for your age!!!

4-Patch Variation Block Exchange

This months were Doris Blume’s and Penny Kehus blocks and it was fun to see all the light colors for Doris and then the beautiful fall colors for Penny….quilts in themselves.

Don’t forget to let the person know if you have to do an IOU.

Please always place a note that has your name and the name of the block to the block you made.  And keep up with those IOUs.

Thank you in advance,

Recycle/Sharpen Your Rotary Blades

Hi Everyone- here is the information on the rotary cutter blades/exchange/recycle program. This is a service offered by LP Sharp Company.

If you have old/dual blades that you would normally throw away, please bring them to the guild meeting (night owls) in the plastic container that you purchased them in along with the required cost (cash).

Generic or other brands

28mm-(1”size)- $1.90 for each blade exchanged

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $2.20 for each blade exchanged

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $4.70 for each blade exchanged

Olfa brands

28mm-(1”size)- $2.20 for each blade exchanged

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $3.00 for each blade exchanged

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $5.00 for each blade exchanged

Once I receive a significant amount of blades, I will mail them in to be exchanged. The normal turnaround for reconditioned blades is 10-14 days.

We can also purchase new blades from this company at a great price. Yes guilds can participate, the company believes, “more the merrier!” If people are interested, I would be willing to make purchases, collect money and distribute. No tax. (and of course, not during the guild meeting).

Generic or other brands

28mm-(1”size)- $20.00/ 10 pack, $2.00 each

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $25.00/10 pack, $2.50 each

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $26.00/5 pack, $5.20 each

Olfa brands

28mm-(1”size)- $30.00/ 10 pack, $2.30 each

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $33.00/10 pack, $3.30 each

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $30.00/5 pack, $6.00 each

If you are interested in any of the above programs, please contact me. If you have old blades, but are not interested in reconditioned blades, please bring the blades in and I will get them recycled.

UFO Club

I was talking to one of our members, and she said that she did not like to sew or quilt in the summer.  I know that quilting can be hard because it is so warm and holding that quilt can make it hotter, but I love doing it all the time.  And I hope all of you who have UFO will keep sewing and getting all those UFOs done. It will feel so good when they are done, and then you have a reason to go out shopping and get some more fabric…

...ROAD TRIP!!!

Remember we will be continuing our UFO Club through this year.  Each UFO has to have been started before January of 2008.  We will be continuing our special gift certificates for the winner at each quarter and some surprises at the end of the year.

Keep quilting…

Books & Barnyard

I'm going to say that the Books & Barnyard Jamboree was a resounding success! The book bags were definitely a hit with all the kids that stopped by our booth. Many of the kids spent up to a half an hour coloring their bags. There were some very creative book bags. All 108 bags were gone by 1:30pm. A Big Thank you Betty McCloud for putting the churn dash on all those bags!
Strung all around the two pop-ups, were the Little Quilts fluttering in the breeze. It helped to draw a crowd to our area. Many of the quilts were sold, leaving only 35 out of the 91. Some of the smaller quilts will be taken to Wild Iris and the larger ones will be sent off for the baby quilts. Thank you to all that sewed these darling Little Quilts. Especially to Nela Dunaway and Judy Walker for their whopping 20 quilts each!
All the stuffed animals were successfully adopted. A couple of the stuffed teddy bears were given to Officer Mitchener of the Bishop Police Department to have in his patrol car in case they were needed for children caught in a domestic violence situation as a comfort. To all the stuffed animal wranglers, Marge Walker, Margi & Meagan Duffy, Carole Sample and Barbara Hinek, Thank You.
And last but not least I would like to say Thank You to Sharon Thompson, Penny Kehus, Vivian Mitchel, Carol Scholl, Marilee Knight, Barbara Hinek, Vasie Tex, Carole & Ken Sample, Laurie Morrow and Courtney McElvogue for your help at the Books & Barnyard Jamboree, I really appreciated your help. To Margi for the water bottles, they did come in handy when it warmed up and for a great spot at the Home Show to sell raffle tickets for our Op Quilt and getting that space for FREE!  To Barbara Stuhaan and Carole Sample for the use of their pop-ups. And to Margaret Phelps for giving me the heads up of such a wonderful event.
The Books & Barnyard Jamboree was such a great experience. I had a blast!  We also had a lot of positive feedback from the parents. They were asking if we were going to be there next year! I think that's a wonderful idea. Hmmmm.....what could we do next time? Stay tuned.
