Bear Necessities

OK so did you miss me? What you did not notice that I was gone?!?!? I have heard just wonderful things about Desi and her handling the business part of the Day Lilies and Nite Owls meetings. Thank you so much Desi.

For those of you who did not know, I was the Dept Head for the Home Ec building at the Fair this year. It was loads of work, and long days but so much fun. I love the faire, especially here in Bishop. I love walking around and seeing people I know and stopping to talk, the food, the rides (nope I did not ride them this year) the games, the exhibits and the D. Derby. Yea I love it all. It reminds me of when I was a little girl and going to the church carnival, and growing up and even sometimes even having a boyfriend to walk around with….very cool.

Being ask to work behind the scenes was a gift that I will treasure. Speaking of the Home Ec Building…Calico Quilters you shined!!!! It was so interesting to listen to the judge and then to be able to hang your quilts…..such a privilege. I was so proud when I recognized a name when we were hanging them. So many Blue Ribbons and Best of Shows. CONGRATULATIONS to all of you!!!!! I was so pleased to see Carole Sample receive the Gay Mitchel Award…..You Go Carole my friend!!! In addition, how about that Op Quilt. Sally you fretted I know but I think it was all worth it. Thank you for your hard work and a job beautifully done……I applaud you and bow at your work. Our past president Margaret and her ribbon and our VP Nela going and also getting BEST OF SHOW. I wish I could remember all the them…. I am in the company of fine quilters.

AND THE CROWD GOES WILD…….

You are all the best. All the quilts were gorgeous, ranging from the traditional to the very contemporary, you are all so inspiring, thank you for sharing your work with our Faire and all of us.

Remember you can never have too much fabric or too many bears,

President, Calico Quilters,

Last Call for Crooked Creek Retreat

Our time at Crooked Creek is fast approaching. On Sept. 7 we'll take off for 2 1/2 days of intense sewing. Cost? $180 for meals and lodging for the weekend, $17 for Saturday night dinner if you would like to come up for just the day. Last day to make up your mind? August 30. Get your check to Marty Voght by that day. She'll attend the Night Owl's meeting on Aug. 30, if you are a last-minute decider. If you want more information, call Marty, 873-3055, but be aware that she's going to be out of town for more than a week before Labor Day.

Quilts of Valor

I know I have I said it before but you all are so awesome when it comes to giving to the QOV Foundation. I am totally in awe of your generosity not only of your talent but also of your time. Desi gave me a whole load of quilts that will be sent to our soldiers and I know that they will be blessed to know that they are remembered and that we support them. Thank you again.

Methodist Church Thank You Quilt

The Quilt Guild suggested making a quilt for the Methodist Church since the guild had met there for so many years. Therefore I am collecting red scraps so we can make a rough edged appliqué flame to go with the flame and the cross the Methodist Church Logo. We will have workshops in the future but the first step is collecting red fabric. The church will be 100 years old next August, so the project will need to be finished by then. Thanks in advance. ~Margaret Phelps

Opportunity Quilt "Shimmering Leaves"

The quilt is at Wildrose Lane Quilting as you are reading this. I did get a second of a sneak preview, and it is beautiful!!! Everyone rise to their feet, and let out a huge cheer. And while you are up, give SALLY DEPERRO a standing ovation, for a job well done. In addition, a huge thank you from the Calico Quilters.

Thank you to all of you who sat and sold tickets at the faire for our Op Quilt. Did it not look beautiful hanging there. Again, I apologize to those who I had scheduled too early in the day. We have had several members turn in their money for the tickets they sold, and the time at the fair brought us over $300 in ticket sales. GREAT JOB!! Thank you. I have the quilt and on the first weekend in October, it will be at the fairgrounds again for the Fall Colors Car Show. Thank you to all of you who already signed up to help sell tickets. We are off to a great start, it up the hard work, and let me know if you need more tickets.

~Margi, Opportunity Quilt Chair

Save Those Scraps!

The Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care Center has asked the guild to save scraps of minkee and flannel for use at the care center. These soft fabrics can be used for nesting and bedding materials for baby birds and other baby mammals. Any size of scraps are fine. You can bring your scraps to the day or night meeting. Day group can give them to Margi Duffy and she can get them to me. Thanks for your donation! ~Laurie Morrow
