Calico Patch

Quilting is a gift you give to yourself.  Whether you design your own, teach this heartwarming skill to others, or simply enjoy the journey of making them for yourself, loved ones, or those in need, you will nurture your soul and certainly enrich your life.  This is the common thread that we Calico Quilters share...our love of quilting.

What a wonderful evening we shared at our annual Picnic on July 22.  There were 38 of us...all happy, all well fed!  We celebrated Margi’s Birthday, watched nine industrious quilters choose a brown bag for the Christmas exchange, and were astonished at the creativity and fun of the 15 blocks entered in the ugly fabric challenge.  These blocks were amazing, and I salute each of you who used your imagination and skill in challenging yourself.

As I write this, it is the beginning of a new year for the guild.  I look forward to serving you as President for the coming two years, and hope that you will find  new friends, ideas, techniques and learning experiences through our guild activities during that time.  In the coming months, we will be scheduling our planning meeting for 2009.  I encourage you to consider being part of that group, where we plan our projects, workshops, areas of community service, and holiday parties.  As a quilting community, we will continue to embrace worthy causes and lifelong friendships.

Remember that our County Fair will be held from August 28th until September 1st.  Sharing your completed quilting projects with others will offer you many rewards, and should certainly take you to a high level of quilting enthusiasm!  I hope that each of you will participate, and display some of your beautiful, quilted treasures.

    Happy Stitching,

  Vivian

         President, Calico Quilters
Calico Quilter's Picnic

Just a quick note to add to Vivian’s report on the picnic.  Thank you so much to Barbara Hinek and her wonderful husband for the use of their tables, and for their help in setting up.  Thank you to all of you who help me load my truck after the yard sale…and thank you to Ted for making the trip out to the park on his day off to help us load and unload and thanks for the Batman movie after the picnic, Meagan and Ted.  I am so glad that the yard sale was such a success, it is a wonderful way to raise money to help with the postage for QOVs.

I am excited about the Brown Bag and to see all the completed surprises at the Christmas Party.  Thank you Marilee and Marge for all you work with the Challenge, and a huge round of applause to all of you who joined in on the fun, they were all great!!!

A great picnic and a very special way to welcome our new Board!!

Good Old Days Raffle Quilt

On March 11, 2008, The Calico Quilters Guild of Bishop, and the Big Pine Crafty Ladies presented to the Laws Railroad Museum a traditional log cabin quilt for the Museum to raffle off as a fund raiser.

This quilt will be raffled off during “Good Old Days” on September 20, 2008.  Raffle tickets are on sale for $2.00 each or 6 for $10.00 and proceeds will benefit the museum as part of the 125th anniversary of the railroad coming to the Owens Valley.

A Quick Word About the Faire

I have the wonderful job as Department Head for the Home Ec Building this year at our Tri-County Faire again.   I love this job and it is so exciting to see everyone quilts hanging in the faire.  Please do not hesitate to enter you work into the faire, share your talent it is very satisfying.

I wanted to offer anyone who is unable to be here in town on the day of receiving the quilts, that I will gladly take them for you.  I will be at the faire grounds most of the week, and I would hate to see you miss the chance simply because you are out of town.

Also, I wanted to tell you to make sure to read the pick up schedule for the items entered into the faire this year, they are different.   In the book it states that pickup is 7am on Tuesday but in fact it is 9am on Tuesday.

If I can answer any questions, or do anything for you concerning the faire, please let me know.  See you there!

Workshop Information

Baby QOV Quilts Workshop

Mark those calendars and come out for a day of sewing.

September 13, 2008 at Highlands, 9 am

Bring a brown bag lunch, guild will provide drinks and desserts.

Kay from Quilting in the Sierras and generously donated some flannels to the Guild for the purpose of making baby quilts for our soldiers who are serving in the Iraq War.

The plan is to set up cutting stations, ironing stations, sewing stations and to kick out those baby quilt tops.  Using flannel blocks, or rail fence or anything else you can suggest.

Just remember it has to be really easy so we can make a lot of them.

This is an important workshop ~ I hope to see you there.

And...

October 11th 10am-2pm at Highlands NIH Baby Stockings Workshop
Georgia is in desperate need of Baby Stockings! There were only 7 stockings left over from last year. Here's what you need for the workshop:
Sewing machine - Scissors - Pins - Thread - Stocking pattern (Georgia has extras) - Christmas fabric or winter looking fabric for the stocking,
cotton fabric for the lining (flannel doesn't work too well when trying to get the baby into the stocking) and whatever kind of trim for the top of the stocking. Please bring a brown bag lunch. The drinks and dessert will be provided. Any questions, please contact Georgia or Desi

Thank you Betty for teaching the Buds & Blossoms Workshop. I had a great time. The block was really easy to make. Everyone's blocks were just beautiful! What great color combinations there were.

And to the past workshop teachers, in case I was remiss in saying thanks, I'm saying Thank You now. We have some very talented quilters in our little guild. I am truly inspired everytime I see their work!

Some future workshops that have been suggested so far: Turtle Pillows that Marge Walker showed at the meetings, Nela's One Block Wonder, and Betty McCloud has another wonderful flower block quilt. If you have any ideas or would like to teach a workshop, please let me know
.

A Special Thank You

Contrary to belief, my closest friends know I am uncomfortable with public attention and all that stuff.  Because I am never quite sure what to say.  In the instance of the surprises I received at the Picnic ~ both for my birthday and my last meeting as president, it would not have made any difference where it happened, I would have been and I am at a lost for words.  Thank seems to not say it enough or be big enough to convey my grateful heart.  The Bear blocks are precious and I can not wait to put them together, thank all of you who made me one ~ the pattern choice was perfect.  The personalized M&Ms and the bear were more than I deserve (but I did hide them from my kids…)  From my special birthday balloon to all my personal gifts I can only say that you my friends have blessed me beyond what I can possibly convey.

Thank you Meagan for my b-day cake and my movie after the picnic.

A special thank you goes out to someone who left a birthday bag by my chair with no name on it.  Now I do not know if you intended to remain anonymous, but I found no name on this gold bag.  But inside was a precious loved brown bear with a white little gown on, she has found a special place in my bedroom, on a special shelf with a few other treasures.

If you are to remain un-named, thank you so much.

I loved being your president ~ it was a lot of work, but the reward is oh so much more.

Again, if not to be repetitive…..thank you so much!!!

Day Lillies

Marge Walker showed us a denim quilt. The squares were different colors of mauves, greens and indigos. The backing will also be denim. She next showed us the Turtle Pillows that sister-in-law Judy and her made. These were way too cute! These turtle patterns came from the Paul Newman's Turtle Camp. Yard sales are a definately a way of finding quilting treasures, and Marge found a Trip Around the World pillow cover for 25cents! The handpieced pillow cover was made by Margaret Crouse, great grandmother of Bob Steele in Big Pine. What a find!

Margaret Phelps showed us her blue woven wallhanging. It had just the right touch of green to offset the blues. She put it together just like you would with paper. What a nice effect.

Nela Dunaway showed us her purple and teal green One Block Wonder quilt. Hard to imagine that it came from just one fabric. Another beautiful creation Nela.

Nite Owls

OK, so it was not too bad ----my first meeting as Nite Owl Leader.  I did want to apologize again for our late start; we had a guild situation come up that had to be handled before we began our meeting.

*From reports, it sounded as though those who made it to the Long Beach Festival all had a great time.  Mark your calendars for next year.

*Please remember if you have any news about one of our members, who is ill, or going to have surgery, or needs a special pick me up,

please email Judy Speed our Sunshine Chair.

*Thank you Viv, for the wonderful snack, those ice creams hit the spot.

*The winner of the door prize was – ME…thank you Mercy, what a great way to start my new job.

*Show and Tell

~Margaret and Roberta shared their winning Challenge pieces from the picnic – CONGRATS!!

~Courtney shared her Buds and Blossoms from Betty’s workshop and her challenge piece.

~Marge shared a denim quilt and her adorable turtle pillows that were made for Paul Newman’s Turtle Camp (yes Desi is going to schedule a workshop)  And also a beautiful hand pieced block that she purchased from a yard sale for 25 cents, and no matter what the bid would not let go of it.

~Nela shared a One Block Wonder, that was beautiful to look at.

~Janet shared a small block that was actually a snow globe…very cute.

So much talent, so many ideas.

Remember that our next Nite Owl Meeting is Thursday, September 4th (because of the opening of the Faire)

If by chance anyone has a round robin or has found a robin robin that does not belong to them, could you please call me.  Thank you.

Bits and Pieces
  • Congrats to Mercy for winning this month's door prize at the Night Owl's meeting! Mercy won a cute cactus candle in a clay pot and some bubble bath. Don't forget that you have to bring next month's door prize.
  • Congrats to Penny Kehus on her retirement! Relax and enjoy the quilting time.
  • Truckee Meadows Quilters, Reno, will be having their Quilt Show on July 19 - 20.
A thank you from Desi

I would like to thank the guild for the fabulous book, "Treasury of Crazy Quilt Stitches". It was a such a wonderful surprise. This book will keep me busy for a very long time. I didn't realize that there were that many stitches! And thank you for signing my book, it makes it even more special.

To Margi - Thank you for the gift certificate, I'll definately put it to good use. And for the bobbin winder. It works wonderful! No more having to unthread the machine to rewind a bobbin. Now I can just keep on sewing those blocks without stopping!

Opportunity Quilt - Peddling through the Sierras

Because I will not be at the Day Lilies Meeting in August, I will be busy setting up the Home Ec building with all your beautiful entries.

I need anyone who can work selling Op Tickets the weekend of the faire to please give me a call.

I have schedule hours for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  In increments of 2 hours.  So call me 873-6147 or email me bearma@usamedia.tv and I will fill you right in.  Because the faire opens on Thursday night we usually do not book times because everyone is wanting to go through it for the first time that evening.

Thank you and see you at the faire.
