The Calico Patch

Thank you Calico Quilters, for your outstanding response and effort towards our

community service project for Inyo County First Five and IMACA. I am proud to say that we will be delivering 129 cloth books to those agencies! This remarkable result, is testimony to your commitment to this guild and to our community. Thank you to the 26 quilters who gave so willingly of their time.

Welcome to our three new members who joined at the Day Lilies meeting in March. Mary Bigler is active with the Big Pine Crafty Ladies, Becky Landaker is busy making quilts for two orphanages in Mexico, and Lavon Edwards, who has previously been a member, has joined us again. We welcome each of you, and hope that you participate in the many activities that are always available to Calico Quilters.

Happy quilting, and may each of you enjoy a beautiful Easter Sunday ~ Vivian

2010 Op Quilt

Work has begun on the 2010 Opportunity Quilt. Thanks so much to all the guild members that took block packets. If you find that your packet is short or have any questions please contact Laurie Morrow (Day 872-5036,Night 938-2007). Remember, packets are due back by the end of April. Please bring them to the day or night April meeting, or contact me and I'll
arrange picking them up.
A big thank you to Nela for her beautiful applique Sierra scene, as well as
her help with selecting all the wonderful batiks.

And a big thank you to Rozella, Ivy and Vivian for their tireless efforts
during the two day cutting extravaganza. Without their help, I'd still be
cutting packets!

Thank you, Laurie Morrow

Nite Owls Meeting

It is so much fun to see all the things that are being made for the Books and Barnyard…..Desi has a whole load of little quilts  they look so pretty on the sofa.  I am sure that the event will be a huge success.

The Round Robins are exciting.  Again, always such creative and beautiful items being sewed and colored.  I can’t wait to see the Surprise Round Robins at the end of this session.

Great meeting, good talks, delicious snack.

Quilts of Valor

We received a sweet heartfelt letter from Kyle Vanderhoof thanking us for the QOV he received.  It amazes me how much care and concern these quilts can convey.

That is why it is so important to keep quilting.

UP TO DATE COUNT:

165 QOVs  and 103 Baby Quilts

STILL AT WAR…STILL QUILTING!!!

WorkShops
The next workshop coming up is the One Block Wonder with Nela,on May 9th from 9am to 5pm. Please bring your own brown bag lunch, your drinks and dessert will be provided. This workshop looks like it's going to be a fun one and you only use one fabric! My fabric that I'm using has six 12 inch repeats (two yards of fabric) for a lap quilt. If you want a larger quilt, get more fabric. I noticed on the sign-up sheet that there were quite a number of ladies that have signed up. I have ordered about 10 of the 60 degree triangles and I will put them aside when they come in. If you would like a 60 degree triangle please let me know so I can order more.

The workshop for June is Betty's Barnyard. It will be held on June 13th from 9am to 5pm. Betty will have a sign-up sheet at the next meetings. Please remember that when you sign up for these workshops to add your dollar. This will help to defray the costs put into prep work time and workshop materials. If you have any questions on any of the workshops, please contact the teacher putting on the workshop.

Quilt Campus Workshop - Basket of Flowers

Calico Quilters was the lucky recipient of a free on-line workshop (thanks to Margi D. for entering us!).  So far we have 22 guild members signed up!

This looks to be a fun, small project, and a way to use up some of those fabrics from your stash!

"Basket of Flowers" is an 18" square wall hanging, that mixes piecing  and appliqué of your choice.  There will be a step each week for eight weeks starting May 1st.  If you haven't signed up and wish to participate please contact Laurie Morrow (jimnlaurie@cebridge.net) or 938-2007.  If you don't have e-mail access that's OK, a printed step and pattern will be mailed to you.

For those with e-mail, you will receive your initial instructions on April 15th from Laurie.  From there you will logon to the web page, register, and have access to fabric requirements.  After that you will receive your first step e-mail on May 1st.

If you have any questions please contact Laurie Morrow

4-Patch Variation Block Exchange

This months were Courtney and Barbara’s blocks and it was fun to see FALL and SUMMER blocks.  Great colors….keep up the good work.

Don’t forget to let the person know if you have to do a IOU.

Please always place a note that has your name and the name of the block to the block you made.  And keep up with those IOUs.

2009 Opportunity Quilt

Peddling Through The Sierras

So Megs and I and the Op Quilt hit the road.

We were at the Ridgecrest Show and the quilt was very well received there, what a generous and very friendly guild.  We sold $100 of op tickets.

Then off to the Glendale Show, Penny Knapp who is a member of our guild, graciously took care of us.  We sold $80 of op tickets.

And a huge thank you to the DMV girls who take such good care of our quilts and sell tickets for us, they turned in $71 of op tickets.

Thank you to all of the members who have sold tickets on their own.  Remember we will be at the Home Show on Saturday and the quilt will be raffled at the end of the show.

Today is your Birthday!

Nela's One Block Wonder Guidelines

Here are some guide lines for "One Block Wonder" quilt   How much fabric should you buy?  The size of the quilt  not only on how much material you buy, but how many blocks you want to make.     To make a good lap size, twin , or full size quilt , measure along the salvage from the start of a design element to the point were the design appears again- this is the size of the repeat.  You should strive for 6 repeat s , of 12", this will make a lap quilt, if you want it larger, then you need to buy 12 repeats.

Larger prints usually feature a repeat about every 24 " This the best fabric to get. Four or five yards will make a large lap quilt.  If you want to make a border out of the same fabric, get some extra.

FOR HEXIGONS; 6 repeats of 24" each is exactly 4 yards.  Add an extra 1/2 or full yard for borders.  FOR OCTOGONS; 8 repeats at 24" is 51/3 yards.  Again if you want a border, get an extra yard.

If you want an inner border, find a nice solid or batik, and get a yard of that

Feel free to call me, if you have any questions,  I do want this to be a happy experience, and each quilt to be beautiful.

Recycle/Sharpen Your Rotary Blades

Hi Everyone- here is the information on the rotary cutter blades/exchange/recycle program. This is a service offered by LP Sharp Company.

If you have old/dual blades that you would normally throw away, please bring them to the guild meeting (night owls) in the plastic container that you purchased them in along with the required cost (cash).

Generic or other brands

28mm-(1”size)- $1.90 for each blade exchanged

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $2.20 for each blade exchanged

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $4.70 for each blade exchanged

45mm-(1 3/4 “)- $3.00 for each blade exchanged

60mm-(2 1/4 “)- $5.00 for each blade exchanged

Once I receive a significant amount of blades, I will mail them in to be exchanged. The normal turnaround for reconditioned blades is 10-14 days.

We can also purchase new blades from this company at a great price. Yes guilds can participate, the company believes, “more the merrier!” If people are interested, I would be willing to make purchases, collect money and distribute. No tax. (and of course, not during the guild meeting).

UFO Club

CONGRATS to Betty McCloud who won the drawing at the Nite Owls Meets for the quarter UFO drawing of a $25 gift Certificate from Dwaynes.  I will have that for you at the next Day Lilies Meeting.

Keep quilting ladies, it is so fun to see all the finished quilts coming in.

Remember we will be continuing our UFO Club through this year.  Each UFO has to have been started before January of 2008.  We will be continuing our special gift certificates for the winner at each quarter and some surprises at the end of the year.

Keep quilting…

Books & Barnyard
First I would like to thank everyone for their contributions of lots of "Little Quilts". The current count is a whopping 90 quilts! I think we have plenty of the little quilts, but if still would like to make a little quilt, I won't turn one away. And a BIG thank you to Betty for preparing the book bags with our churn dash logo! The kids are going to have lots of fun coloring these bags.
For our part in the Books and Barnyard Event, I need some volunteers to help with the setting up and taking down of our area at the fair grounds and to help with the book bags and little quilts. Set up time is at 9:00 am. The event starts at 10:00 and goes until 2:00 pm. I figured on two 2 hour shifts for the book bag's table and also for the little quilts area. I think we only need a couple of people for each shift. If you would like to help out in any way, please let me know by the next meetings. I am so looking forward to this new adventure. This is going to be fun!

July Picnic Challenge Block

For those of you who are still a bit confused about the use of yellow in the challenge block, here are some guidelines.

All sides of your block must not total more than 72 inches.

This is a black and white challenge block, with yellow as an accent color.

You must use solid black, solid white, and the solid yellow you received.

If you wish, you may also use:

A black and white print.

A yellow and white print,

A black, white & yellow print.

Embellishments can be used, but only in the colors of black, white and yellow.

Only 25% or less of your block can be yellow. This includes the solid yellow and the yellow in any of the prints. Keep your total use of yellow to 25% or less. Remember, yellow is your accent color. Have fun with this challenge, and get those creative juices flowing, as this challenge will make a great display at our 2010 Quilt Show!
