President's Message

This has been quite a few weeks. The day lilies celebrated Viginia's departure (date unknown by us because she likes to sneak away) at Sharon's house. It was a gala event. This was the last time many of us saw our dear friend Peggy Zimmerman, who passed away August 27.

Our picnic at Isaac Walton Park was lovely. The shade and coolness was a treat combined with the sound of the creek. Margi collected $100 from our rummage. Thanks Margi and thank you donators.

Congratulations to all of you who entered and got ribbons at the fair quilt show. There were ribbons everywhere and the quilts looked so nice hanging so you could really see them. I'd list the winners BUT I'm sure I'd miss someone. So rather than mess up I hope you were all impressed as you saw them for yourselves. Margi's display of the Quilts of Valor was excellent. You couldn't walk in without bumping into those neat quilts. Suzy out did herself this year in the Home Ec Building.

Now its onto fall and cool quilting weather. We'll celebrate Halloween at the Highlands Center on October 27. Bring soup, bread, desserts or drinks. The guild will have bowls and utensils. Remember we have to clean up after ourselves so we can keep using the facility!

Oh yes - its nine months till the Quilt Show. In order to have a "healthy baby" we all need to get those UFO's finished, get our challenge going and get ready to help Jan and her co-chair, Margi.

Remembering Peggy

Last week we lost our dearest friend, Peggy Zimmerman. Her name was always at the bottom of any list but she was number one as far as the Calico Quilters were concerned. She was a quiet beautiful and genteel lady who projected only positive thoughts whenever she spoke.
She was small in stature but so tall in her integrity, kindness and she would be one of the first to volunteer for many tasks and do it happily and with joy. She was our chef for the workers luncheon on the day we set up our first quilt show in 1993 and continued to make delicious soups and bread for many years. She would fill several large crock pots and load them into her car and arrive at the church in time to have a noon call for "chow".
Bill Zimmerman was one of our Quilt Rack Drivers and would bring his huge flat bed trailer and have it waiting at Ruth Blakely's home so that when the rest of the crew arrived, he would be ready for loading and hauling the racks to and from the church. Even when his health started to fail him, he would still show up and be ready and willing to drive his truck each year.
Peggy continued with the lunches until she could no longer carry the full heavy crock pots to her car, but she took on other responsibilities so cheerfully whenever she was asked. One of her greatest attributes was her uncanny timing of sending a card to you whenever you needed a lift or had done something noteworthy.
She was a fountain of information on the "olden days" as she grew up here in Bishop and she could point out where her family had businesses or where she used to shop or go to parties.
Peggy and Bill gave their children the love and nurturing that made them a close knit family and we know that her family knew how important her quilting friends were to her. She so enjoyed getting together with her family during the holidays and they had a tradition of taking chili up to the mountains to all have lunch and cut their Christmas Trees each Thanksgiving. Occasionally we would meet one of her children or grandchildren, the ones she had talked about so often and she would delight in sharing them with us.
Now that she is gone we will all miss her smile, her independence, her love of all her friends but mostly we will miss her at our "gatherings", they won't seem quite the same without her. There will be an empty chair waiting for her to arrive, but she will only be inside each of our hearts now for as long as we meet together.
So, good-bye for now, Peggy, we love you and we know you are at peace, healthy and now with Bill.

Quilt for Soldiers

I have to tell you that I received some really nice response to our display of the Quilts for Soldiers. People were surprised and some were very touched with the work the guild is doing, especially the baby quilts.
I received even more quilts from the Nite Owls at the last meeting. YOU GUYS ARE SO AWESOME!! And the workshop for the drawstring cases was so much fun and everyone did such a great job, inspite of me messing up the cutting instructions. Thanks you for hanging in there with me. And it was great to see Sue and Larry!! The cases are going to be such a welcome addition to the quilts we sent, so keep them coming. I do have copies of the pattern if anyone still needs a pattern and has not received one. Just give me a call.
Again, as always, keep up the great work, remember you are touching hearts and lives of our soldiers and their families. And we have several ways you can participate in this of course making a soldier quilt, a baby quilt, or a drawstring case, as well as I am still collecting red, white and blue blocks 12-1/2" square. And just a reminder I still have two bolts or so of fabric that would work for backings.
