More on the Quilt Show

So we are off and running. There is a lot of work that has been going on since last year to make this show a reality. Many have given of their talents and hours of their time. A show like this takes everyone involved, so I hope you will take the time to look at the sign-up sheets and commit to working. There are still a few shifts available. It takes many hands. Just a reminder for all those who have taken a shift, you will be given a chance to win a door prize. And we have collected many wonderful items from very generous vendors as well as come Calico Quilters. We won't want to miss a minute of this show.

Confirmation packets for entries have been mailed out. If you turned in an entry form but haven't recieved your packet contact me ASAP please.

Thank you to all of you who will show their quilts. Margi Duffy, Co-Chair of Spring Time Garden Quilt Show 2006

In Memory of Gay Mitchell

We will miss her funny disposition and sense of humor and her beautiful quilts. There will be more written for Gay in an upcomming issue.

In Memory of Barbara Toth, "Barb" to all

She was a friend of 42 years and it was a good 42 years. The years were full of fun, sharing, ups and downs of childrens lives, and the good times of quilting!

My fondest quilting memory is when she was talking to me about the "stash". I asked here what was a "stash"? She started telling me by giving me a few yards of fabric. You all know what happens next. It grew from boxes, to drawers, to shelves, and finally to a room!

My thoughts of her are many and I would like to share my feelings with you. "Grief never ends, but it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. The sense of loss must give way if we are to value the life that was lived". We love you Barb and will miss your smiling face.

Crazy Quilt Block Clarification

There has been a few questions regarding this project. Is this handwork only or is machine embroidery allowed? After some thought on the subject, I believe this should be handwork only. The whole idea of this project is to show off our handwork either by different combinations of embroidery stitches, beadwork, buttons, charms, etc. For those of you that have an embroidery machine, you could make a machine embroidery applique on a piece of fabric and applique it onto the block.

I have been doing some research online, looking for ideas on embellishments and found two excellent sites. The first one is Crazy Quilt Central and has a Crazy Quilt FAQ(frequently asked questions) and ideas for embellishments. The only problem to the site that I found was that the info below "A few places to go on the web", these sites were no longer available, but everything above this gives you a lot of information. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/6531

The second site is Sharon B's Dictionary of Stitches. This has just about every embroidery stitches that exist. It also has lots of up close pictures of sample blocks to get lots of ideas. These blocks are heavily embellished and beautiful. It is just a wonderful site. www.inaminuteago.com .

Quilts of Valor

I would wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who continually have given quilts to our wounded soldiers. I know that everyone is busy and especially with our show coming up, but I wanted to remind everyone that the need is still great. The stats for our wounded soldiers as of April 7 is as follows: Iraq - 17, 469; Afghanistan - 685. The foundation has awarded 4,670 since 2004 SO you can see the need is great. And it takes talented and giving quilters such as ourselves to keep those quilts arriving to our wounded soldiers.

And this need will continue even after the war is over, our wounded will still be healing, and our quilts have given so much comfort. So we must stay committed to this, we must keep our promise we made when we first started that we were in this for the duration and not just a quick draw for attention.

Again thank you from myself personally and from the foundation. I will end with a quote from the founder of QOV's that sums it all up. From Catherine Roberts:

I'll close for now. You all are my heroes! I pray you continue with this project. We influence the recovery of our combat wounded service members. How? QOVs of course! And, this is not an overstatement.
