President's Message

Dear Guild Members,

Last night I presented Kate Reeling with the Calico Quilters Scholarship for $500.00. It was a wonderful event. Bishop community groups gave the class of 06 more than $200,000. Pretty amazing for a little town, don't you think. Kate leaves July 3 for Portland Design School. Classes will begin on the 10th. Her goal is a BA in Fashion Design. She has been steadfast in this goal all during high school and her teachers recommend her highly. People in the guild who know her or her family agree that she is an outstanding young woman.

I am one of the few presidents that has had the privilege of overseeing two quilt shows. This enabled me to see the growth of our chairman and her staff present an even more creative show. It just gets better and better and more of us appreciate the time and effort that Betty McCloud gave to start this endeavor. While some miss vendors, others see this as a plus because we really focus on the quilts and not just a buying frenzy.

I am really proud to be your president and thank you ALL for always pulling together to accomplish great things.

Quilt Show in Carson City

Post Quilt Show News

Bravo to everyone who helped put this show together! The show came together beautifully. We had countless comments on the high quality of the quilts. Some we even comparing us to quilts they saw at the big Paducah show. We have a very creative bunch of quilters in the Eastern Sierra. Several women where awe inspired by Nela's use of color in her quilts. They say 'how does she know which colors to choose?'. Thank you Mom for being our featured quilter. I only wish you had felt better and could spend more time at the show with your quilts.

Thanks to Margi Duffy for all the sweet decorations that added just the right touch to the Springtime Garden theme. She is wonderful to have as a co-chairman!

Good job to those that worked setting the racks up. Yet again we had a bit of trouble with one of the zig zag racks, but they got it together. Good job to Margi Walker and her sister Judy and Sherrie Williams who as a team, put together the front wall racks. Thanks to the husbands that helped out. I think I can name them all, Dan Duffy, Paul Thompson, Chuck Phelps and Jim Morrow. Oh my gosh if I forgot one we thank you too!

And a big thank you to all that helped setup and take down the show. I'm so happy that everyone works so well together as a team. And hopefully you all had a good time doing it.

Has the music started yet.......

Lastly, I want to thank my committee chairs. You took you positions very seriously and did a fantastic job. The tables all looked nice and springy. And the show ran smoothly throughout the two days.

Things are already progressing for the 2008 quilt show. Marty Voght will be our featured quilter. Marty, thank you so much for accepting. Sally DePerro has agreed to do the next opportunity quilt. Her creative juices are already flowing. I'll announce the theme and the challenge for 2008 at the June meetings.

In Memory of Gay Mitchell

When I first met Gay, I was around 8 or 9 years old. Gay and her family moved into the house next door. And...Yes, she was my bus driver! Boy was she strict! She didn't take any backtalk from anyone. I think her bus load of kids were the best behaved of them all! She was defiantly well liked and respected.

Many years later she became my own kids bus driver! When Courtney was in Kindergarten, she sat at the back of the bus and fell asleep on the bus ride home. Gay dropped off her kids, and went back to the school. When Courtney didn't come home, I was starting to become a little bit upset (okay, a lot upset!),when the phone rang. I pick up the phone and Gay told me that she had Courtney with her at school. She also told me when she took one look at who she had with her, "It could only be one of Desi's kids!". Really, she meant that in a nice way! Gay always did a walk through on her bus before she locks it up.

One memory that stands out the most, was when Gay was in her backyard and heard a little girl screaming for help. Gay looked over her back fence and saw a dog attacking the little girl. My dad just happened to walk out into our backyard, when Gay hollered for my dad to come and help. They both jumped over the fence, dad pulled the dog off the girl and Gay grabbed the girl and ran. They both rushed the girl to the hospital, because her parents weren't home at the time. The girl had numerous stitches. Gay and my dad saved that little girls life! Unsung heroes!

Gay sometimes showed a gruff exterior, but we all know that she had a heart of gold and was willing to do whatever. Gay you didn't have any of us fooled for one second! She will always hold a special place in my heart and will be greatly missed.
