Bear Necessities

The Bear Necessities ~ Can you believe it, it is already June. The time of the year for graduations, weddings, and new babies. For all of you that are celebrating any of these, please accept my congrats. Lots more reasons to make quilts.

Sue Wallace and I presented Marley Healy with her scholarship on Wednesday night. What a beautiful girl, in fact, all the graduates were all dressed up and it made quite a sight. Desi spoke to Marley afterwards and let me know how pleased Marley is with the scholarship…… another strong reason why we sell opportunity quilt tickets. I am so proud of how our community comes together and is so generous with our graduates. I was sure I sounded lame but my wonderful support group made sure that I knew that it was just fine. Quite an experience and I look forward to doing it next year. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.

Remember you can never have too much fabric or too many bears,

President, Calico Quilters,

Just a quick note to thank everyone for all the wonderful stars I have been collecting. The guild was even given a wonderful quilt top made by Janet Lowney, she said "I did not want to continue to make the single blocks each month." And it is beautiful, red, white and blue one of our soldiers will be very pleased to receive it. Thank you Janet and thank you to all of you that are making the QOV Friendship stars. ~Margi

Historian Tidbit

I read this at the Nite Owls meeting, but for those of you who weren't there, here it is in a shortened version.

In March 1992, M.J. "Jane" Fisher, who was the mayor of Bishop at the time, declared the third Saturday of March be designated as National Quilting Day in the city of Bishop. Quilting has played a huge part in history and why not let it have a day all to its self?

I just thought that was a neat little tidbit. ~Courtney

A Scrappy Thank You

I would like to thank all of you who have given me your scraps over the past few months. I am hoping to have a couple of tops finished by the picnic, but you all know how I am at getting things done. I would like to send a HUGE thank you to Linda Bucknam who gave me about four UFOs to finish as well as a complete quilt top. I will finish these and send them off as QOVs. My living room is filling up with scraps and I love it. ~Courtney

Recommended Books

Hi Ladies!

Here are a few book titles that were requested at the Guild meetings. The first is "Embellish It" by Linda Anderson. The book shows us how to do her embroidery quilting and big stitch quilting. You can get this book at Quilting in the Sierras. Margi is ordering more. The second book is by Joen Wolfrom, called "Color Play". This book can be used with her "3 in 1 Color Tool". You can check to see if you can get a copy at either, Quilting in the Sierra's or The Stitch Peddler. The third book, I got at Spellbinder Books. It's called, "Quiltmaker's Color Workshop" by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. A great guide to understanding color and how to choose fabrics. You can check with Spellbinder to see if they can order you a copy or order it on-line. The ISBN# is, 1-59253-276-4. Happy Reading!

Day Lily Block Exchange

CONGRATULATIONS to Carol Johnson for winning the red, white, and blue stars in our monthly block exchange. Speaking of the block exchange, this month's exchange will be nice and simple, you will not even have to come to the shop to pick up a pattern. Let's make 4-Patches. Finished block should measure 10". Please use a white or white on white plus any color of polka dots you want. Two white squares and two polka dot squares. Polka dots make me smile, ever since I was a little girl and my mom made me a top made of fabric fill of dots..Oh, I thought I was so cute. I have been collecting them for a while and now they seem to be everywhere, so my stash is growing. Make as many as you would like and bring them to the next meeting. In addition, our next block fabric squares are Polka dots too so the winner can have some blocks to put between the 4-patches. Finish size 10". I know there has been much discussion on the size of this exchange. There seems to be no perfect size for everyone, so we are going to try 10" for a while. Join in - it is a great way to build your stash especially if you are planning a scrap quilt in the near future. Thank you to Marilee for her donation of fabrics. ~Margi
