2006 Quilt Show and Challenge

This Memorial Day Weekend marks the one year count down to our 2006 Calico Quilters Guild Quilt Show. Margi Duffy will be my co-chair and will be using her wonderful decorating skills to excute the "Springtime Garden" theme throughout the show. We'll be putting together the show committee starting October - November.

I announced the Guild challenge project at the June meeting. It is as follows:

  • A handbag or tote, requiring only that it has handles of some kind and items can be carried within it.
  • It must be embellished in some manner, i.e. beaded, embroidery, crystals, whatever.
  • It must interpret the "Springtime Garden" theme.

Don't be afraid to go wild with these bags. Have fun and try some new techniques. The bags will be displayed and voted on at the quilt show.

If you have any concerns or questions about the quilt show or the challenge call or email me.

Thank You, Jan Dunaway, chair

Thank You! Calico Quilters

I wanted to thank all of you very much for your generous gifts and also for your good wishes. I was very surprised and had no idea. How my mom kept it from me I will never know. I am off to Hume Lake for the summer but will look forward to coming home in September and seeing all of you.

Again, thank you so much, Meagan Duffy

Bits & Pieces
  • Next month is the Picnic, so be thinking about the quilter's garage sale and the Christmas brown bag exchange.
  • Bunny Palu won the Bunny Love quilt. The ticket was drawn at the June meeting by Meagan Duffy.
Quilter's Yard Sale

So, are all of you going through you stashes and quilting rooms for all those treasures that you can live without but someone has to have. Remember our sale is at the PICNIC in July. So get moving and gather up some stuff for sale. You can bring things to either the day or evening meetings, or if you would like to drop it off at my home, 106Sierra Grande in Wilkerson. Or of course I can swing by and pick it up also (I almost said that I could send Meagan.......I guess I will miss her...hahah)

Thank you, Margi Duffy

(on a personal note: deep thanks from Meagan's mom)

Changes To the By Laws

Several changes to the By-Laws was voted in at the June meeting. Elections have been shifted from December to July. The reasoning behind this change? That it is very difficult for new officers, expecially a new president and treasurer, to come into office in January, and face the production of a quilt show in May. Every former president who has faced this problem agrees to this change in the terms of our officers.

Since we already hold an evening meeting in July (the picnic), it make sense to have the elections at that time, when the necessary quorum (30% of the membership) is present.

The changes to the by-laws are as follows:
In Article VI, Section 1, the fiscal year will be changed from calendar year, January 1 to December 31, to August 1 to July 31, to correspond to the term of officers.

In Article VIII:

Section 1, the appointment of the nominating committe will be changed to April.

Section 2, the presentation of the slate of officers will be changed to June.

Section 3, the election of officers will be changed to July.

Marty Voght, Secretary

Quilts for Soldiers

Quilts for Comforting Our Soldiers
Let Them Know We Think of Them

I am standing up, and applauding you ladies. I am getting 11 quilts for the soldiers and 8 baby quilts ready to be mailed. And I am blown away by your generosity. The quilts, as beautiful as they are, keep coming and coming and I have to just applaud all of you Calico Quilters. I know that they touch many hearts and are most grateful. So I say keep them coming. We have sent over 74 quilts for the soldiers, and already 28 baby quilts. Never take lightly your hard work and dedication to this project...it is a vital project and works only as long as we give. Debi Earls sent me the following information, it sounds like fun and the quilt is nice, and it will go to another soldier.

Quilters love mysteries so the Quilts of Valor project has teamed up with Judy Laquidara to design a mystery just for Quilts of Valor. The finished top will measure approximately 57 x 66, the perfect size for a QOV. The pattern is not difficult - half square triangles, flying geese and snowballs. YOU can do it! Fabric requirements will be posted June 15; cutting directions will be posted June 20 and the first clue will be given Monday, June 27. Clues will be posted on the next four Mondays.

To join the group, send an e-mail to QOV-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
