Bear Necessities

I hope everyone had a safe and Happy 4th of July. We did some yard work, you know that endless pulling weeds and cleaning up, had a bbq and drove down Gerkin and watched the fireworks from the Airport.  I love fireworks, it must be something that I have left from being a kid and the excitement of it all and then watching my own kids playing with sparklers.

I thought a lot about our involvement in QOV’s this 4th.  And I am proud to be the chairperson and proud of our guild for our contribution to our soldiers during this war.  It amazes me how stirred up my heart gets when I see our red, white and blue and also to be involved in such a foundation.  Now that I am stepping down from president, I look forward to being more involved in QOV’s.

We received a thank you card from Katelyn thanking the guild for the scholarship.  She is coming up to her senior year, and send us a couple of pictures of some of her styles….beautiful.

And how wonderful that we are a small part of it.

Laurie Morrow has solved the question on our non-profit status. Thank you Laurie, and thank you for all your work at taking care of the paper work.  And yes, I guess it is true, we were once the Calico Queens.

Both the Day Lilies and Nite Owls had great discussions about the 2010 Quilt Show.  Everyone present filled out the questionnaire, and I did send some out by email.  If you did not fill one out or receive one from me and would like to, please email me (bearma@usamedia.tv) and I will make sure you get a chance to fill one out.

Lots of ideas were shared, concerns and questions, all in all a great discussion.

More information on that to follow.

ALWAYS……Remember you can never have too much fabric or too many bears…..

A Special Thank You

So, my last newsletter as president.

And so many people to thank.

Mostly thank you everyone for such great 2 years.  It has been a lot of work but I think that it shows in what a great guild we have.  We have done a lot and there is so much more to do and accomplish as a guild and as personal quilters.  No, I will not even talk about FABRIC STASHES….

Thank you so much to the Board, you all have worked hard and I appreciate you all putting up with my constant questions.

*Jan Dunaway -  Thank you so much for yet again a great quilt show.  Your talents are so wide spread and creative, there is no way to thank you for all you do as chairman of the quilt show and longarm quilter.  Personally I am so glad that I got to know you and blessed to now count you as my friend.

*Desi  McElvogue – Thank you so much for being the Nite Owl Leader, that is a big job and I appreciate all you do.  Thank you for always answering the phone late in the evening and listening to me.

*Laurie Morrow – Membership Chair – thank you so much for a beautiful directory and for always keeping up updated on changes and additions.

*Dusty Majors – thank you for your honesty and always being there.

*Sally DePerro – Opportunity Quilt for Quilt Show 2008 – you are such a pleasure to work with and I loved our quilt…thank you.

*Judy Speed – thank you for being taking care of all our Sunshine matters.

*Thank you Kay Smith and Stacy Leach for our new Opportunity Quilt.

*Georgia Wade – thank you for handling our Christmas Baby Stocking ..what a special project that is.

*Courtney McElvogue – Historian – thank you for going through all that stuff and getting us organized.

*Meagan Duffy – Quiltalk Editor – thank you for taking this job on, I am so grateful that you were home to share this with me.  As always, a blessing.

*Kay Smith – Quilting in the Sierras – thank you so much for your support and generosity with the guild whenever we called on you.

*Too all of you…I am as I have said before blown away by the talent of all the Calico Quilters.  You are all so different in your styles and all shine so brightly.  I have counted it a blessing to be your president.

The UGLY fabric Challenge

Hi Quilters –

We are doing something fun for the picnic this summer.  Everyone that has wanted to participate has received a piece of the above fabric.  (If you didn’t get a piece, call Margaret Phelps.)  We now need to put our imaginations to work and create a block.  The block can be any size or shape, but it must use a recognizable portion of the fabric to qualify for judging.  The three (3) categories are listed below and the winner of each category will be awarded a $25 gift certificate.  Let the creative juices flow!!!

Categories: Most Inventive Use of Fabric, Favorite Block, and the Funniest Block
Quilts of Valor

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be putting more attention on the QOV’s now, I want to remind everyone that there is still a need for baby quilts.

And QOV, of course.

I will be announcing more updates later.

Still at war ... Still quilting.

Day Lillies

Well now that I think about it, this will be my last newsletter article for Day Lilies also.  Look for my new articles including one for  Nite Owls.

Our meeting was started first with a good report about Chuck Phelps.  We are so glad that he is recuperating.  I saw Margaret and she was telling how she is going to re do the barn and is reorganizing her sewing room..plus taking care of Chuck and all the duties of the household, and animals……what a lady.  We share in your joy that Chuck is doing well.

We had two drawings this meeting, Desi was the winner of the doggie blocks and Betty was jazzed to win the basket blocks…CONGRATS!!

Nominations were shared, and Marty stepped up for the vacancy of Secretary…thank you Marty.

The Day Lilies had a long talk on a 2010 Quilt Show, concerns and ideas were shared and the questionnaire was passed out and collected.  We will have the outcome of that in the July newsletter.

Personally, thank you Day Lilies for your support, it was an honor to be your president and to work with all of you on various projects – all striving to make Calico Quilters a great guild.   Thank you Judy for the wonderful job you did as Treasurer and you availability at all times.  Thank you for keeping track of the money matters and picking up the mail.  Thank you Viv for your secretary work, I barely got to work and it he minutes were on my computer, thank you for your professionalism and humor.  Thank you Desi for your endless help in the kitchen and making sure that the doors are open for us, and all help in  clean up afterwards.

Thank you Dusty for all your support and emails…you are the best!!

See you Tuesday,

UFO Challenge

It is so much fun to see quilters getting involved in this.  I am not sure why it makes that much difference but it does.  Something in the back of your mind reminds you that you have entered that item in the UFO list and now it must get done.  My list is lengthy and I have gotten 3 smaller items done, and it paid off because I was the winner of the first UFO drawing….

A $25 gift certificate to Vons.  YEA! Thank You!  And Betty McCloud won the second one…a gift certificate to Spellbinders.

. Remember it does not matter if it is hand appliquéd or tied, all 30’s fabrics or only hand dyed fabrics.  The goal is to get those quilts done….

So keep busy...

Bits and Pieces
  • Congrats to Mercy for winning this month's door prize at the Night Owl's meeting! Mercy won a cute cactus candle in a clay pot and some bubble bath. Don't forget that you have to bring next month's door prize.
  • Congrats to Penny Kehus on her retirement! Relax and enjoy the quilting time.
  • Truckee Meadows Quilters, Reno, will be having their Quilt Show on July 19 - 20.
Opportunity Quilt - Peddling through the Sierras

I just got our quilt back from Jan and have passed it on to Betty, she has volunteered to do the binding.  It is so pretty and outdoorsy.  I think you all will like it.  It was in the shop but Kay did not get to see it, so she will be surprised.

Our first opportunity to sell tickets will be at the High Sierra Sweet Adelines Craft Show in conjunction with the Owens Valley Cruisers, on October 4 and 5th. I will have a sign up at the July Day Lilies and Nite Owls meetings and at the Day Lilies in August and at both meetings in September.  I will keep you up to date as to where else it will be.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this quilt.

Thank you Kay and Stacy for you work and contribution of fabrics.  We appreciate it.
