Bear Necessities

So is everyone ready, is the binding on all those quilts that will be gifts, and all the quilting done, and all the shopping too? Of course they are, right? I love this time of year. Celebrating the birth of my Lord, Jesus and all the festivities going on. I love Bishop Weather and it seems like everyone is in a better frame of mind, I wish we could keep it throughout the year… As well, the Calico Quilters are busy. BB's Christmas Party was this week and the combined Guild party is just around the corner. In addition, the crazy quilts squares and strippers, some are done, some have a break this month and have 2 months to work on their next block.

Desi and I met and went over some of the new year projects and dates, lots of fun stuff coming up. So put those bells on, and funny hats, and red sweaters and come on out on the 14th to have a grand old time at our Christmas Party.

Allow me to take a moment to wish you all a wonderful Christmas, full of family and blessings and please take care if you are traveling Remember you can never have too much fabric or too many bears,

President, Calico Quilters

2007 Membership Dues

2007 is fast approaching, so just a reminder that we will start collecting membership dues at the December meeting and on into January 2007. Since we are not supposed to exchange money in the club house at Highlands we ask that you either mail your $15.00 check to the address below:

P.O. Box 802 Bishop, CA 93515

or give your check before or after the meeting to one of the following board members; Margi Duffy, Judy Speed, or Laurie Morrow. Checks can be made payable to Calico Quilt Guild.

We will hand out new 2007 cards at the February meetings. There are several new members that paid the full $15.00 late in 2006, so you will be good through 2007. I’ll send an e-mail to those few letting them know they paid ahead. Thanks for your support!! Laurie Morrow

I forgot to give the Goodies Sign-Up List to Desi or Margi to pass around at the Day Lilies Meeting. Sorry. I will have it at the Christmas Party or you can always give me a call and I will put you down. We need cookies and/or candy. Anything kid-oriented. Thanks. Courtney

Workshops
Jan 18 Crazy Quilt Sewing Night. Bring your Crazy Quilt Block from the Round Robin and you can embellish it more if you like. Or...make another small block and we can have fun practicing embellishments! So bring your block, bangles and beads and let the fun begin! - Desi

Day Lilies

November was a fun meeting. A special thank you to Carol Sample for volunteering to be a Fabric Exchange assistant, it will be a big help and lessen the confusion. Marty was the big winner of 14 blocks, "Homespun Christmas", the blocks were all so pretty.

*We will be exchanging 9-patch blocks at the January meeting, 9-1/2 unfinished, in blues and whites. Any shades of blue and you can use white on whites of you like.

*Our fabric exchange of 10-1/2 blocks for January will also be in blues, any shades.

REMEMBER, we will not have a meeting in December and our January meeting will be at Highland, same times, Board Meeting at 9:30 am, and regular Guild meeting at 10:00am. See you there, invite a friend, Margi

Sewing with Marty

Anyone who wants a day of sewing to interrupt the holiday doings: Come to Marty's studio 9:30 a.m., Dec.30, with your sewing machine, rotary cutter, fabric, and a brown bag lunch. We'll experiment with Carol Doak's Simply Sensational 9-Patch Stars, mix-and-match paper pieced star patterns that print out of Marty's computer. If you want to use special foundation paper, bring it and we'll see how it behaves in the printer. By all working on this, we should come up with at least one or two SENSATIONAL stars. Marty will make coffee (tea upon request) and there should be some Christmas cookies left in the can.

Listen Up! The Historian is Speaking

For those of you who missed the night meeting, I am trying to gather information on the Guild in order to create at least four scrapbooks to show at the Quilt Shows and Doll Shows. That way, people interested in joining the Guild could look at what we have done, what we do and who we are. If any one has some of the following items, could I please get a copy from you:

  • Old roster lists
  • Past newsletters (before Jan 2005)
  • Photos / old scrapbooks or photo albums
  • Information in general
  • Memorial information on our friends who have passed away
  • Anything else you think might be important for the history of the guild

Thank you so much. I'm going to have SO much fun. Courtney

Birthday Club and Friendship Star Exchange

The lists for both of these will be handed out at our Christmas Party, is you cannot make it, I will be sending it to your home. Both will be starting up in January. Please note that if you have something to exchange to a Day Lily or a Nite Owl and you are unable to make the meeting, please drop it off with me at QITS (Quilting in the Sierras) and I will make sure it makes the appropriate meeting. We want to make sure that everyone involved gets their blocks or gifts. Also, please do not take it to Ben Franklin's, Desi has enough to cart back and forth to all the meetings. I have checked with her and she agrees. Anyway, this will give me a chance to see you when you stop by. Thank you. Margi

Just a Little Business

Quickly:

  • Remember that monies cannot be exchanged at Highlands during our Guild Meetings.
  • Remember to keep selling those Op Quilt Tickets, we only have until March this time
  • The big thank you to Marty for handling the Log Cabin Workshop, the blocks are very nice,
  • Remember if you want something in the newsletter, the deadline is the Thursday after the Nite Owls Meetings; as well please write your own articles. This will free up Jan to do more on our website.
Round Robins in 2007

The Round Robins will begin again on March 1, 2007. I will have the sign-ups at the Christmas Party and will go until the February 1st meeting.

Here are your choices ladies.

  • Crazy Quilt Block - Same as before. Make an 18" or 20" block on a muslin backing.
  • "Traditional" Round Robin - Center block of your choice. You can supply your own fabric.
  • "Small" Round Robin - The center block can be up to 8 1/2"(unfinished) maximum. The borders should be no more than 2 1/2". Remember, this is suppose to be on the small side, like a miniature quilt. This might be a challenge to some, but I'm always up for a good challenge! How about you?
  • Strippers - Same as last time. The strip should be no longer than 45inches, the width (top to bottom) will be what ever size, unless you have a preference. Please put instructions in with your first strip. If you would like to continue with your last theme, that would be fine.

There is defiantly a lot to choose from and one that could be a challenge, but don't let that stop you! These last Round Robins were wonderful and very inspiring to say the least! I know the next Round Robins will be just as beautiful as well. Great job Ladies! As always .... Any questions, please give me a call. Desi
