Bear Necessities

Happy April and Happy Spring to all….can you feel it in the air. I love it. I love to feel the warmth but then also feel a cool breeze. But not those 1000 mph winds,,,,, I am torn between starting a completely new project, finishing off some of all the ones I have started or just sit and hand quilt and watch chick movies. The new round of Round Robins is off to a great start, I always have to smile as I hear the comments as each person shows their project, it consists of either "Oh, I have a great idea for that one," or "I am so glad I am not doing this." It is always a lot of fun and even as a spectator it can inspire you and give you some great ideas, So we will soon see Desi carting off all those carriers! I want to send out a huge thank you to Laurie Morrow for making us up a new MEMBERS LIST. It looks great Laurie, thank you for all your hard work. We will soon be considering an applicant for our yearly scholarship; the applicants must be continuing in the textile field, I will keep you informed. As well welcome to our new members ~ we are so glad you have joined us.

Remember you can never have too much fabric or too many bears,

Trunk Show and Workshop with Linda Anderson

Do not forget to mark your calendars:

  • April 27th 6:30-9:00 pm Trunk Show at Highlands No charge
  • April 28th 9am to 2pm Color Theory Workshop $5

You do not want to miss this opportunity to see some beautiful quilts and to join the workshop. Linda is not only knowledge and a beautiful quilter, but she is also fun to be with and a generous person with tips and techniques. We have a nice list going of people who will be attending. Please let me know if you need the class supply list or more info. Remember money is due to me before the workshop.

Quilts of Valor

Just a quick update the Foundation has approved the use of Minkee on the backs of QOV's. I have also checked with Nela and Jan and it is ok with them too. Also, please consider also making a drawstring bag, these bags help our soldiers in many ways. Sometimes when they are shipped around, their personal things do not catch up with them right away. If you need a pattern, let me know. Keep up the great work, and please do not forget those baby quilts. As the founder of the QOV Foundation says, Still at war, still quilting. ~Margi

Day Lilies

If you want to laugh out loud, come to a Day Lilies meeting. We have fun there. The "girl" time is always such a nice welcome after a long month. With our fabric exchange, we all received a pile of beautiful spring floral fabrics. And with our block exchange, Judy was the winner of the pretty floral blocks that Marge Walker shared with us. Just won 13 in all. In addition, Sharon was the winner of the "too cute" bunny blocks that Marge also shared with us, there were 10 bunny blocks. Marilee shared her new block exchange choice with us and we are off and sewing. Also our 8-1/2" fabric squares for next month's exchange is solids. Those will fit in great with Desi's Amish theme going throughout several of her projects. As well, a few of our ladies were off to see Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson this weekend, so we are looking forward to a full report. See you on April 24. ~Margi

Picnic Reminders

Just a reminder, that we will exchange embellished blocks at the picnic in July this year. Guidelines: Any block, any size, any embellishments, any holiday or non-holiday theme….let your imagination go and enjoy making this block. As well, remember your junk is some one else's treasure, so clean out those tubs and containers of fabric, book shelves and pattern bins, and donate your stuff to the yard sale, the proceeds help with postage for the QOV's.

~Margi

Friendship Stars

The exchange is going very well. Everyone seems to be pleased with their blocks. A big thank you to all of you who are not participating in the exchange but are still making QOV Friendship Stars, we could not do it without you.

Laws Museum Needs Our Help

Quilting History Talk at Law Museum

The Laws Railroad Museum has asked the Calico Quilters to lead one of their third Saturday morning talks. The talks are centered around a historical activity, place or event in the Owens Valley. We are scheduled for Saturday May 19th at 10:30 outside the Library (weather permitting) or inside the Library in the conference room. Talks are from 30 - 45 min long. Research to date has not found much information on quilting in the Owens Valley, so the talk will center around general quilting history from approximately 1880 - 1940. Laws has several quilts that can be displayed, and we are asking the public and guild members to bring antique quilts to share. We will also demonstrate construction of the hand pieced log cabin blocks. If you are interested in participating please contact Marge Walker, email: margerose214@aol.com, or phone (760) 938-2245 or Laurie Morrow, email: jimnlaurie@cebridge.net or phone(760) 938-2007.
